Our Candidates

Upcoming State and National Elections

The Fair Deal Committee is working on some important upcoming state and national elections in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Additionally, we have identified some swing Congressional districts in Illinois which went for Hillary Clinton in 2016 or were narrowly won by Trump and we will work to elect Democrats in those swing districts.

The following three Democratic candidates are running in important IL swing Congressional Districts.

Each of these impressive candidates has a good chance of flipping their GOP district Blue.

Brendan Kelly

Brendan Kelly running in the IL 12th Congressional District (Southern Illinois)

Betsey Dirksen Longdrigan

Betsy Dirksen Longdrigan running in the IL 13th Congressional District (Springfield, IL and environs)

Lauren Underwood

Lauren Underwood running in the IL 14th Congressional District (Chicago exurbs: Naperville, Oswego and environs)

Sean Casten

Sean Casten, a scientist and clean energy entrepreneur, is running for Congress in the IL 6th District.  He is running a robust campaign against the incumbent Rep. Peter Roskam who has been in office in this District for over a decade.  This race has been identified by both the GOP and the Democratic Party as one of the top ten ‘must win’ races this fall.  Because Hillary Clinton won this District by 7% points in 2016,  Sean has a very good chance to swing this District from Red to Blue.

It is critical that we flip the Congressional 6th District from Red to Blue this fall.  Winning this race will help ensure the much-needed Blue Wave this November to take back the House of Representatives in order to block the GOP/Trump agenda and protect the Mueller investigation.

Incumbent Peter Roskam is increasingly out of touch with his constituents.  As Chair of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Tax Policy, Roskam was a key architect of the recent regressive tax legislation.  He has voted with President Trump more than 94% of the time.  Plus Roskam hasn’t held a public town hall to listen to his constituents in years.  Representative Roskam denies the existence of man-made climate change, is strongly pro-life and voted repeatedly to eviscerate Obamacare.  Roskam ranks 4th in the Congressional House Leadership so winning this race would be important step to ‘cleaning out the House’.

Sean’s entire career has been devoted to fighting against climate change.  He has an undergraduate degree in molecular biology and biochemistry and a masters’ degree in engineering management and biochemical engineering, which helped inform his career in science and business. In 2007, Sean co-founded Recycled Energy Development, LLC in Illinois, with a mission to profitably reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the recovery of otherwise wasted energy.  Sean has been active with climate advocacy organizations and has been recognized as an engaged, effective community leader.  A resident of Downers Grove, Sean is a husband and father of two.

In Congress, Sean’s top priority will be to support a sustainable economy that invests in infrastructure, job training and apprenticeship programs and combats climate change so that we are building a future that creates opportunity for all our children.  Sean will stand up to the dangerous Trump-Roskam agenda and put partisan politics aside so we can support our local economy, invest in our schools, and fight climate change.

Sean Casten deserves our support.

Tammy Baldwin

Tammy Baldwin was elected to the U.S. Senate on November 6, 2012, winning a hard fought race and making history as Wisconsin’s first woman to serve in the U.S. Senate and the first openly gay member elected to the Senate.

In the Senate, Senator Baldwin has been committed to working across party lines to strengthen the essential pillars of economic security for the middle class – investments in education and workforce readiness, quality health care for all Americans, building a strong manufacturing economy, and ensuring retirement security for today’s seniors and future generations.

Tammy previously had a distinguished career fighting for progressive causes as the US Representative from Wisconsin’s 2nd Congressional district from 1999 to 2013 as well as serving three terms in the Wisconsin Assembly representing the 78th district. Prior to serving in the Wisconsin Assembly, Tammy served on The Dane County Board of Supervisors and the Madison City Council.

Born in Madison, WI, Tammy received her B.A. degree from Smith College and received her law degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1989. Tammy practiced law from 1989 to 1992.

Tammy is an effective dedicated Senator actively pursuing Democratic causes. Unfortunately, her 2018 Senatorial race has been targeted by the Koch brothers and other conservative PAC’s. On Jan. 30,2018, Steve Peoples of the Associated Press reported: ’The influential Koch brothers and their powerful donor network plan to pour money into Wisconsin this fall to keep Gov. Scott Walker in the statehouse and replace U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin’.

Tammy Baldwin deserves our support.
